A very special part of the Jewish Law
Every 50 years there was meant to be a complete restoration, slaves, goods, land were all meant to be returned to their original state. It was a special time to celebrate God's goodness and generosity.
That also means good news today! But how, I hear you ask? Let's look into this a bit more.
16 When he came to the village of Nazareth, his boyhood home, he went as usual to the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read the Scriptures. 17 The scroll of Isaiah the prophet was handed to him. He unrolled the scroll and found the place where this was written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,
for he has anointed me to bring Good News to the poor.
He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released,
that the blind will see,
that the oppressed will be set free,
19 and that the time of the Lord’s favor has come.”
20 He rolled up the scroll, handed it back to the attendant, and sat down. All eyes in the synagogue looked at him intently. 21 Then he began to speak to them. “The Scripture you’ve just heard has been fulfilled this very day!”
This is a deliberate partial quote from Isaiah 61. Jesus knew very well that this was a well known passage to the Jews, concerning the restoration of everything to the Jews after their captivity and God's promise to fulfil all the Jubilees lost during their history!
The key for us is the end of this passage: we are still in the "today" that Jesus declared!
The Gospel message, the Good News that Jesus brought is that He launched a massive Jubilee that would last until His return.
Are we ... Slaves/Captives to sin, habits, etc?
Do we have ... Sick bodies?
Do we have ... Disturbed minds/emotions?
Are we ... Impoverished, financially or otherwise? Are we ... Unable to see a way forward, a way out? Do we see ... No hope for the future?
The good news is that Jesus has answers for our problems, our needs. The really Good News is that He is here in our "today" to reach to us in whatever dark place we might find ourselves, if only we will turn to Him!!
