Corporate Worship

Using ‘worship’ to mean what we do to glorify God in his presence with our voices and hearts, our music, words and silence” not the wider interpretation of our whole life being an act of worship
Everything must point to Jesus
Colossians 3:16 (Contemporary English Version)
16Let the message about Christ completely fill your lives, while you use all your wisdom to teach and instruct each other. With thankful hearts, sing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs to God.
Colossians 3:16 (New Living Translation)
16 Let the message about Christ, in all its richness, fill your lives. Teach and counsel each other with all the wisdom he gives. Sing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs to God with thankful hearts.
This is Christ promotion, not self-promotion
Everyone has a part to play
1 Corinthians 14:26-33 (The Message)
26-33So here's what I want you to do. When you gather for worship, each one of you be prepared with something that will be useful for all: Sing a hymn, teach a lesson, tell a story, lead a prayer, provide an insight. If prayers are offered in tongues, two or three's the limit, and then only if someone is present who can interpret what you're saying. Otherwise, keep it between God and yourself. And no more than two or three speakers at a meeting, with the rest of you listening and taking it to heart. Take your turn, no one person taking over. Then each speaker gets a chance to say something special from God, and you all learn from each other. If you choose to speak, you're also responsible for how and when you speak. When we worship the right way, God doesn't stir us up into confusion; he brings us into harmony. This goes for all the churches—no exceptions.

Practical ways to help us
  1. Our own life of worship

  1. Coming with Faith-
19Therefore, brothers, since we have confidence to enter the Most Holy Place by the blood of Jesus, 22let us draw near to God with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience and having our bodies washed with pure water. 23Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful.

  1. Coming earlier-to be with God’s people
  2. Using the microphone, so we can all hear
  3. Participating/stepping out
·         It can feel scary when you feel you might have something to share with the church. Check it out with someone first if that helps.
·         Remember, it is to build up the church-so not critical or judgemental
·         It’s a privilege that God is giving you something to share from him, for the church-if he is confident enough to do that for you, shouldn’t you be confident enough to share what he gives
·         Use words like, ‘I have a sense of what god wants’ to say to us’; or I’I think that God is saying’...
·         Try this out in your small group
Faith & Expectation
We delight in him-he delights in us
We draw near to god-in the old covenant, believers could only draw near to god in a limited way thro temple ceremonies, but from the court yard; the priests could only go to the outer court, the ‘holy place’ when it was their appointed duty. But into the inner room, ‘the holy of holies’ no-one could go but the high priest and only 1 a year BUT Now, in Christ, we have the privilege of being able to entre directly into the holy of holies when we worship:
Therefore- worship in the church is not practice for a later heaven experience of genuine worship; IT IS genuine worship in the presence of god
23 You have come to the assembly of God’s firstborn children, whose names are written in heaven. You have come to God himself, who is the judge over all things. You have come to the spirits of the righteous ones in heaven who have now been made perfect. 24 You have come to Jesus, the one who mediates the new covenant between God and people, and to the sprinkled blood, You have come to the assembly of God’s firstborn children, whose names are written in heaven. We experience His presence
Exodus 40-Then the LORD said to Moses: 2 "Set up the tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting, on the first day of the first month .......... 33 Then Moses set up the courtyard around the tabernacle and altar and put up the curtain at the entrance to the courtyard. And so Moses finished the work. 34 Then the cloud covered the Tent of Meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. 35 Moses could not enter the Tent of Meeting because the cloud had settled upon it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.

Matt Redman song- Remembrance
Lord we remember you,
And remembrance leads to worship,
And as we worship you,
Our worship leads to communion,
We respond to your invitation,
We remember you
